That was written for Welsh-speaking practitioners. This version is to help non-Welsh speakers to get the gist and share with colleagues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All examples will remain in Welsh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This builds on resources such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/content-design\/links\">Links on GOV.UK<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.wales\/linking-within-sentences-inline\">Linking from within sentences (inline) on GOV.WALS<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/readabilityguidelines.co.uk\/content-design\/links\/\">Links on Readability Guidelines<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m not going to repeat those helpful guidelines here, but read them to understand the wider topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Links and the imperative<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Links should describe one of these two things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the content that is at the other end of the link<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the action that the user can perform<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are suggesting or proposing a direct action to a user within a sentence, use the imperative mode:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cysylltwch \u00e2\u2019r swyddfa\u2026 (Contact the office)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gwnewch gais am\u2026 (Apply for)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Talwch am\u2026\u00a0(Pay for)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To explain further, here is a Welsh language <a href=\"https:\/\/www.llyw.cymru\/creu-dolenni-o-fewn-brawddegau-mewnol#:~:text=Dolenni%20mewnol%20at%20dasgau\">example of a link in a sentence on gov.wales<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&#8220;i gael teithio ar fysiau am ddim <a href=\"https:\/\/www.llyw.cymru\/gwnewch-gais-am-bas-bws\">gwnewch gais am b\u00e0s bws<\/a>.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When to avoid the imperative<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Link text should not contain a verb that describing how the user should act to access \u2013 or understand \u2013 the information. That is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Darllenwch am\u2026 (Read about\u2026)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ewch i\u2026 (Go to\u2026)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Darganfyddwch\u2026 (Find\u2026)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Defnyddiwch y\u2026 (Use the \u2026)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dysgwch am\u2026 (Learn about\u2026)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cliciwch ar\u2026 (Click on\u2026)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s nothing to say you can&#8217;t use those verbs within sentences, just not in the link text itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Use the infinitive of a verb in buttons<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If button text represents a task that the user is navigating themselves, use the infinitive verb.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Buttons contain common actions such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dechrau arni (Getting started)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Parhau (Continue)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Arbed a pharhau (Save and continue)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cyflwyno (Submit)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cwblhau (Complete)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Anfon (Send)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Use the infinitive of a verb in headings, navigation links and titles:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Use the verb noun if you are writing a:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>page title<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>heading<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>link in a menu<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>any link not in a sentence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Gwneud cais am\u2026 (Apply for)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Trefnu\u2026 (Book\u2026)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Archebu\u2026 (Order..)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is because these are describing the action in order to direct the user to the right place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Avoid the impersonal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Do not use impersonal forms of &#8216;-er&#8217; or -&#8216;ed&#8217;. These are less familiar, less direct and less user-friendly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Gweler (See)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Defnyddier (Use)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Darllener (Read)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Eled (Go)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Links to content in another language<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/content-design\/links\">GOV.UK<\/a> suggests adding text to links that go to another language<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u2018trwydded car, ee o awtomatig i drawsyriant gyda llaw (yn Saesneg)\u2019 where \u2018yn Saesneg\u2019 means \u2018in English\u2019.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These are general guidelines. I&#8217;m sure you&#8217;ll come across occasions where there is ambiguity, especially within sentences.
